SOE Urania by novafox SOE Urania by novafox
Novafox's shipyards entry for the contest.

Hand digitalpainted in Painter SAI, best 50$ you can spend for an art program.

*Dont feel bad if im not commenting on favorites, im saving them until after contest but a BIG thank you for making this my most popular work within 3 days, my previous most popular took 3 years to get to that point and sadly its a lousy line work (i think its in scraps now too) of a ship that just happens to wind up on google's search function when you typed in eve online for images.

Shipwright notes.

No technical notes on fitting abilites and peformance, CCP has a hard enough task fixing lag and balancing things as best they can within the engine of the game they made (ie rockets) plus im sure they have a nice team of designers that work out numbers alot better than I can. I would like to see a medium launcher and drone bay for a partial flight of medium of drones with replacements.

Main hull base is Amrrian but supplimental additions are from Gallente (additional shaping) and Caldari (sensor packets) inspirations. Not an exact mirror of the Caldari looking ORE ships whom are supposed to be Gallente. Profile is semi agressive to embody the act of going to the unkown and mostly offset by paint scheme for peaceful activities as SOE ships pose little threat to any actual military ship.

I choose cruiser sized because I wanted a good mix of utility survivability affordability and mobility. Where as a 1km long should would call for battleship assortment and though it would be able to do the job just as well it be too slow for getting out of trouble and the sorts as an explorer needs such in order to survive accidental run ins. Cruiser BPOs are cheap in relative terms and the ships in that class are very affordable and a pilot can easily seat themselves in a cruiser within a 14 day trail period.

Paint scheme is original as there are currenlty no real SOE ships currently in game to bounce the design or color theme off of. Despite this, it has been accused to being similar to EOM (Equalibrium of Man) ships paint scheme however EOM ships typically have silver and darker blues in camo patterns, while the soe ships have a more standard blues and white strippings pattern.

The name Urania is the name of the Greek Muse of the Stars. This helps fall into the fact this faction ship has heritage from both gallente and amarr as is the same fact for the SOE organization in eve. All my Sisters of Eve, ships are exploration themed in name and function. So Urania is the most respectable for the original intended design, a tech 3 civillian cruiser on the science front to rival the ORE faction. Where as Tech 1 ships are named for the event of exploration, and tech 2 named after spirits often lost or inspiring.

Overall I'm not too happy with the picture, I couldnt get the metal tones to come out as strong as I wanted to, also its Isometric instead of true perspective, I guess im still not ready to make good works in that perspective specially when it messes with shadows. Yet its the only picture I can reliably finish in a short manner for the contest and I'm not going back to some of my more complete older designs for this but it wont excuse me from going back and finishing an idea alreaedy in my gallery to full specturm some deserve. Also I intend after the contest to place the Urania in its natural habitat, though its a simple cut and paste job I need more practice painting space scenes.

Good news is I retired another note book full of ideas and updated alot of old stuff, though most are not eve related it was a good practice in updating my styles to current.

Incomming Update Note*
Going to update it with the offical 'Sisters of Eve' symbol from eve online's website, and get a MS paint to put in letters for me, ill have to blow up the picture first to AA the lettering from MS paint but it should do the job when I shrink it back down. Im also going to redo the line work to be a bit more accurate in particulare the references to each other. Currently the base for all 6 the Port side is ways ways ways off now that I look at it agian. Ill have to correct this and bounce the other 5 views back off of it so that the view points look convincingly matching the prepestive view.

I am sorry for not replying but its been very busy with my school and I cannot particpate to any significant capacity outside just makeing some raw concepts that somone else will have to fix up game system deisgns which im sure the programmers have covered.

Good luck with your project.

I can really see these as a Cruiser. Perfect design. If your making it a Tech 2 ship. Make a tech 1 ship for pilots who can't afford it. Don't ruin a good ship with the prize.

Apparently the contest ends tomorrow (21.12.2010), but so far there are very few entries and even less good ones. I'm pretty sure I saw few of them before on devart too. Submit Urania, win the contest and let me fly the ship please.

It's a nice design, but I feel the whole piece lacks polish. I had thought you had moved on for the sake of working on other entries, but looking through your gallery I only see the Albatross, which has less polish. I see a great many fantastic designs, but no others in the proper format. I'm guessing you got distracted by something else, and I don't want to beat you up about it, so I'll critique what you have finished.

Silhouette is very clean. Good choice for base object shapes. This strikes me as a Coast Guard style patrol ship. I'm very fond of the arch along the dorsal aft, but I don't care for the honeycomb shapes. The oval shape on the dorsal fore is a bit too reminiscent of a cockpit. I believe it is a hollow cylinder shape correct? This would be better illustrated by putting a light source inside, and having it glow outward along the sides, highlighting it's concavity. The other thing that lends it's self to a cockpit impression the gentle sheen, it looks like a glass canopy.

Size is established properly with your windows, but I'd like to see shapes other than horizontal lines. A little variation. They also get mixed up a bit with what I'm assuming is engine glow to the ventral aft. Also (and this is something I forgot to do with my entry) try to make some of your windows dark, so that it doesn't look like everyone left the light on in every room on the ship. Captains get cranky about electric bills :p

I responded to your critique btw, but I forgot to post it as a reply, and these boards have no edit/delete function :( Anyway, if you want to have a look it is there under my entry. TTYL :)

Thanks for you indepth critique I hope I can take some of this away with my next ship.

Yeah I got held up with the blunder ship I just recently posted, I fought very damned hard against the impossible stuructre and making it orthographic which wasnt helping as it had a m.c.escher-esc error on it.

The honeycomb is a new shaping not seen in eve on a larger scale I hope to used to to represent sensor clusters.

And you're right the probe launcher tube needs work. However the statement about the coast gaurd look gives me a good feeling as I was aiming for a civillian ship. As for window placement I purposly picked only the linear design in efforts to bend the flow a bit as they can command some viewer attention on a minor scale. On other thips I do place verticals and slanted ones where fitting to help define shape in very dark areas. Also ships in eve have a metric tonn of windows... well cept thier frigates.

Once again thank you very much for your critique, Ill be doing an indepth collaboration with a fellow eve ship designer to be shown some ropes on improving color presentation (a major issue on my end as often it looks too much like a cartoon)

One of the better digital paintings I've seen in this contest. I'm guessing the reason your orthogonal views are so shoddily done is because you poured your heart and soul into the colored version first, right? ;P

Nice design. And good luck.

Are we allowed to submit our entries to groups? I saw the stuff in the rules about it not being allowed as a daily deviation and all that, but wasn't sure about groups. Its just some contests get uppity about submitting to other groups until the contest is closed.

Ive been submitting entries into groups to promote them but as long as they're not DA i dont see a problem. Ill re read the rules again just in case though and if it is the case ill contact group admins to reverse the ordeal.

Nice design and color scheme with a focus on cockpit location. Space ships and space scenes were one of my biggest exercise experiments when I was learning 3D applications back in 1999. Looks like a hand drawn creation at that great work. =)

I do like the design. The colours and the patches in the hull and the bridgy thing in the back. It all makes it look like it's carved out of stone. Which is nice. I like designs that makes the ship connect to something else, give it a bit more meaning. I think it's interesting how it does that while still looking like a normal not so extraordinary spaceship. Good work and nice presentation. The text and symbol in the middle bottom I think should be done with a computer.

Because both cold and regular fusion can't procure more energy than is being put into it and god forbid I actually know how to fix that issue as Im not a phsyics major myself.

BTW this was by hand design computer only assisted in paints and layers.
